It is inevitable - in the course of teaching, you'll encounter parents and families that will be challenging. Sometimes those challenges are overt - parents might get in your face, make crazy allegations, or seem to want to argue about inconsequential things. The education profession is full of practices, strategies, and techniques that seem intuitive (and have been around for decades) but don't make any difference in learning for students. In fact, some learning myths can harm kids and make learning more difficult. For example, have you ever heard of learning styles? Did you know that there is no research to support the idea that teaching according to a student's preferred style (ie. auditory, visual, or kinesthetic) improves learning? In fact, trying to teach to a student's "learning style" could do more harm than good. Quite simply, there are some strategies that we use in the classroom that, while they seem intuitive, don't have any research to support their use.
